Process for Legal Change of Religion

To formally change your religion, the following steps must be completed:

a. Affidavit for Change of Religion
A sworn affidavit must be submitted, declaring the change of religion. The affidavit should include:

  • A clear statement of the new religion being adopted.

  • The reason(s) for the change.

  • A declaration that the decision was made voluntarily, free from coercion or undue influence.

b. Newspaper Advertisement
A public announcement of the religion change must be published in:

  • At least one nationally circulated newspaper.

  • At least one regional/local newspaper (based on the applicant’s place of residence).

c. Gazette Publication
The final step involves submitting the required documents (including the affidavit and newspaper clippings) for official notification in the Government Gazette. This ensures the change is legally recognized and recorded.

a. Affidavit on a stamp paper of minimum value INR 10.

b. Original newspaper copy in which the advertisement was published.

c. Original conversion certificate from the respective religious institution.

d. The prescribed application in printed format duly signed by the application and two witnesses and declaration.

e. Two passport size photographs.

f. Photocopies of valid ID proof

g. A solicitation letter alongside the registration charge to the authority.
